What Time Does it Hurt Most?
Oriental Acupuncture theory indicates that our life force cycles through our body’s organs in two hour segments. When the life force is focused in a particular organ area, any imbalances, diseases, or difficulties related to that organ will tend to flair. Likewise, as particular emotions are often related to particular organs, these emotions might be more intense during the corresponding organ time. This information can serve as a clue as to where to look to determine the source of a problem, be it pain, tiredness, or waking regularly at a specific time of night. With this information in hand you can start looking at toxins in the environment, recent dietary or activities changes that might affect a particular organ. For example, a client of mine was waking up regularly at 1:30 a.m. and somehow couldn’t get back to sleep until a little after 3:00. She was distressed and agitated during this time period but couldn’t seem to access any reason for her agitation. Using the organ clock, we noticed that this is “Liver time.” The Liver affects many of our body’s systems because it is largely in charge of filtering toxins. It also is commonly connected with the emotion of anger. My client consulted her naturopath about her liver and was given appropriate supplements to bring her back into balance physically. At the same time she did some journaling and we did work in our counseling sessions around areas of suppressed anger. As she balanced out emotionally, her body, with the additional support of the supplements, was able to balance physically and she found herself sleeping through the night once again. Are there times when you or your child is more prone to waking, tiredness, or difficulties in functioning, emotional, cranky? The organ clock may provide clues as to what may be out of balance. It is interesting to note that the Triple Warmer is also supposedly associated with harmony and general well being. So 9-11 p.m. might be a good time to focus on your own or someone else’s harmony and increased well being.Organ Times –11pm – 1 a.m. Gall Bladder1 a.m. – 3 a.m. Liver3 a.m.- 5 a.m. Lungs5 a.m. – 7 a.m. Large Intestine9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Spleen/Pancreas11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Heart1 p.m. – 3 p. m.
